Design Guidelines

Design guidelines, either stand alone or as part of mechanisms such as Detailed Area Plans, provide additional means to focus on achieving a particular design objective or to protect aspects of the built environment that are considered worthy of preservation or of attainment. They can be agency required or proponent implemented and can be used to limit flexibility to achieve a specific outcome or introduce additional discretion. The design guidelines prepared for “The Reef” project ensured particular architectural styles, features and colour and materials palettes were applied to support the theme of the project and add value to the final product. The guidelines adopted within the Detailed Area Plans for Pinjarra Meadows applied additional requirements to ensure matters considered of concern by approval agencies were addressed to the satisfaction of those agencies.
